Usera District is one of Madrid’s 21 districts, administratively arranged in the following quarters: Orcasitas, Orcasur, San Fermín, Almendrales, Moscardó, Zofío and Pradolongo.

It covers a surface of 770.28 hectares and it is delimited by the River Manzanares, Puente de Praga, Paseo de Santa María de la Cabeza, Plaza de Fernández Ladreda, roads A-42 and M-40. It borders to the west and nothwest with Carabanchel, to the northeast with Arganzuela, to the east with Puente de Vallecas, and to the south with Villaverde District.

Information about Usera

Origins of Usera

A small part of the territory belonged to the townships of Carabanchel and Madrid after annexations at the end of 1940 and 1950; most of it belonged to the township of Villaverde, prior to its integration in Madrid in 1954.

The name of the Usera District had its origin in some land located north of Villaverde. This land belonged to “Tío Sordillo”, a farmer whose daughter married Coronel Marcelo Usera. This man proposed the idea of building on that land to make it more profitable, so between 1925 and 1930 proceeded to its division and sale.

There is a large Chinese community in Usera, and this is reflected on the retail stores, restaurants and typical products sold in some shops in the district.
