Southeast Regional Park

Rivas-Vaciamadrid is a Spanish town in the Region of Madrid, located 15 km to the southeast of the capital.

It borders to the north with Vicálvaro District and San Fernando de Henares; to the south with Arganda del Rey and San Martín de la Vega; to the east with Mejorada del Campo and Velilla de San Antonio, and to the west with Getafe and Villa de Vallecas District.

75% of its township area is part of the Southeast Regional Park, where the Rivers Jarama and Manzanares meet.

Information about Rivas-Vaciamadrid

The origins of Rivas-Vaciamadrid

The first settlers of the geographical area of Rivas-Vaciamadrid go back about 2,300 years, when a Carpetanian dwelling was established in a place known today as Miralrío within the township existing today.

The name stems from, on the one hand, Captain Guillermo Rivas, who colonised the area as a Christian settlement in the 11th century by order of King Alfonso VI. On the other hand, Vaciamadrid seems to come from the Arabic expression Manzil Mayrit, that means “inn [el parador] of Mayrit”, a place where walkers would stop on their way to the city.

In 1845, Rivas included Vaciamadrid, being known as Rivas del Jarama.It was the result of the union of two villages with houses spread out around the large estates.

During the Spanish Civil War, the village was destroyed and was rebuilt by the Directorate General of Devastated Regions in 1954.The village developed with limitations, and it ended up having about 500 inhabitants at the end of the 1970’s. In the 1980’s the first buildings inhabited by members of cooperatives were built, and that is when there was a demographic boom.
