Capital of the Great South

Móstoles covers an area of 45.4 km2 and is the second most populous town in the Region of Madrid. It is located 18 km to the south of the capital and belongs to its metropolitan area.

Geographically it is located in the central area between the Central Plateau and the River Guadarrama Valley. It is known as the Great Capital of the South of Madrid, which includes the area between the towns of Navalcarnero, Alcorcón, Fuentidueña de Tajo and Aranjuez.

Móstoles is also home to the Scientific Technology park, King Juan Carlos University, the UNED University and one of the Provincial Traffic Police examination centres.

Information about Móstoles

The History of Móstoles

The municipal district of Móstoles has been populated since remote times, as proved from the Paleolithic archaeological remains, but the first urban remains date back to Roman days. At that time Móstoles belonged to the extensive territory of the city of Toledo, and remains have been found at different sites.

It has been a Villa with its own jurisdiction since 1565, and was therefore no longer dependent on Toledo thanks to the municipality privileges granted by Felipe II.

In the 16th century Móstoles was an agricultural village with around 300 residents and during the 17th century Madrid's dependence on it increased for the supply of cereal, straw and fodder for the Royal stables. The villagers sold their surplus crops, coal and hens at the markets in the city.

For centuries the urban area of Móstoles was structured around three axes: the Extremadura road and the former roads from Segovia to Toledo and from Valencia to Salamanca. The buildings were mainly built along streets and alleys and aroundplazas and small squares, forming a round urban nucleus. In the middle of the 19th century Móstoles had 19 streets, one Plaza and three small village squares, featuring very simple architecture in line with the typical Castilian rural buildings.

The name Móstoles comes from “mustum et olea” i.e. must and olive oil, since grapes and olives were both very important crops for a long time.
