Moratalaz District is one of Madrid’s 21 districts. It is located to the southeast of the capital and is divided into the Pavones, Horcajo, Marroquina, Media Legua, Fontarrón and Vinateros quarters.

It covers an area of 634.42 hectares and borders to the east with Vicálvaro, separated by the M-40; to the south with Puente de Vallecas, separated by the A-3; to the west with Retiro, separated by the M-30 and to the north with Ciudad Lineal, separated by the M-23.

Origins of Moratalaz

The district arose from the division of the former district of Moratalaz - Vicálvaro in the restructuring of 1987.

The dehesa de Moratalaz was developed as a single unit by a single developer and gave rise to a dormitory town at the end of the 1950s. Empty spaces were left between this area and Vicálvaro which were later completed with housing.

Cultural centres are located in the district, such as El Torito cultural centre, El Torito sociocultural centre and Eduardo Chillida sociocultural centre.

  • The origin of the name Moratalaz could derive from the composition murat, a Visigothic word meaning "in height", and alfaz, an Arabic word for "sown field". Moratalaz would mean "field sown on a hill".
  • The Hogar Ferroviario colony was a cooperative of railway workers and are the oldest buildings in Moratalaz.

The district has numerous green areas, including the Moratalaz - Z park, the epicentre of its lively social life, with almost 50,000 square metres of surface area, with sculptures reproducing the Toros de Guisando, a small lake and the canal.
