Information about Majadahonda

The History of Majadahonda

There is no clear history on the origins of Majadahonda, but it is said that it dates back to a settlement by shepherds in the 13th century who built huts there. Over time, these huts gave rise to a village Called Majada-honda. The name stems from the word “majada”, a sheepfold and shelter for the shepherds.

Majadahonda developed into a village in the 16th century, with a census of 400 inhabitants.

In the 17th century there was a fall in the population, barely reaching five hundred inhabitants by the end of the century. It is said that Felipe IV was about to to sell off Majadahonda, as had happened with Boadilla del Monte and Pozuelo de Alarcón, but the transaction never actually took place.

In the century of the so-called “Age of Enlightenment” the population increased to reach around 800 inhabitants according to the Floridablanca census.

Majadahonda was on the battlefront during the Spanish Civil War, and most of the original village was destroyed. The main Plaza, Town Hall and Santa Catalina Church are still standing today.

A new village was built on both sides of Camino Ancho. The village underwent major urban development from the 1960's onwards. The economy changed from farming to services and it became a residential area with a sharp population increase.
