Former crossroads

  • Puerta del Ángel
  • Lucero
  • Aluche
  • Campamento
  • Cuatro Vientos
  • Las Águilas

La Latina District covers an area of 2,542.97 hectares and runs parallel to the Extremadura road to the southwest of the capital.

It borders with the districts of Carabanchel, Arganzuela, Centro and Moncloa - Aravaca and includes the quarters of Los Cármenes, Puerta del Ángel, Lucero, Aluche, Campamento, Cuatro Vientos and Las Águilas.

Latina District must not be confused with La Latina Quarter, which is located inside the Central District. They share the same name because both of them are named after Beatriz Galindo, La Latina, a humanist who was a friend of Isabella I of Castile, and hence her nickname La Latina.

The Bridge of Segovia, which joins the historical centre with the southeast of Madrid was built in 1574 during the reign of Felipe I. It is the work of the architects Gaspar de Vega and Juan de Herrera.

Information about La Latina

Origins of La Latina

The Latina District was the crossroads imposed by the proximity of the Toledo and Segovia bridges, where the Extremadura road, Called Camino de Móstoles or Camino de Alcorcón until the 17th century met, which in turn was the meeting point of Camino de Húmera, Aravaca and San Isidro.

With the annex of Carabancheles to Madrid in 1948, the current territory became a part of the Carabanchel district. In 1971 the Carabanchel district was divided up into three parts, leading to the Usera, Carabanchel and Latina districts.

Buildings expanded along the Extremadura Road from 1880 to meet up with Carabanchel Alto and Bajo. The cemeteries that were in the area prevented joining up with the quarter that had been built on the other side of Toledo Bridge.

The military barracks of Quinta del Sordo and the Campamento and Cuatro Vientos quarters were located in Puerta del Ángel quarter. The other four quarters were created after the middle of the 20th century.
