Xatafi, Camino Real

Located to the south of the Region of Madrid, in the northern part of the South Plateau in the Manzanares River basin, Getafe belongs to the Southeast Regional Park at a distance of 13 km from the centre of Madrid.

Getafe's proximity to Madrid has led it to become one of the most industrialised metropolitan areas in the Region. Nevertheless, it is not considered a commuter town, since it has its own entity and status, and owing to the huge amount of industry, many of its inhabitants work and live in the town itself. The population boost has given rise to the development of new accesses, new neighbourhoods and public services.

The history of Getafe

The settlers of several villages joined together in 1326 to form a village on the road linking Madrid and Toledo. This village was Called Xatafi, from the word “jata” meaning a long thing. It is believed that this is because of the long main street, which was actually a part of the road linking Madrid and Toledo. The name evolved to Xetafi, Jetafee, Jetaphe, Jetafe and finally to Getafe.

This history of Getafe is divided into three stages, the first spanning the period of Prehistory until 1326, during which different civilisations inhabited the area before it existed as a town. The second stage spans the period between the 14th and 20th centuries when Getafe emerged as a town and underwent gradual development, and the third stage from the 20th century onwards, when it changed from a farming town to an industrial town, with an increase in area and activity.

Alhóndiga Park is located in Getafe, covering one million square metres of green area and comprising one of the lungs for the town and for the southern area of Madrid. The park comprises a pedestrian circuit of 20,000 square metres, cycle path and running path. The town also has some excellent children’s playgrounds:
