Land of fountains

Located 22 km to the southeast of Madrid, Fuenlabrada covers an area of 39.41 km2. It is one of the most industrialised towns within the Metropolitan area of Madrid.

The fountains in the town are closely related to its name, since it takes its name from one of them. The fountains that are still working today are as follows: Cuatro Caños, Cruz de Luisa, Bulevar 1 de Mayo and Las Escaleras.

Information about Fuenlabrada

History of Fuenlabrada

Fuenlabrada originated from the settlements of Loranca and Fregacedos, which were later repopulated by a dozen families. In the 14th century they moved to the current old centre since the neighbouring settlements were stealing water and livestock from them.

The first urban settlement was in the street known today as Calle de La Fuente, and it gradually expanded until 1606 from when there are records of several streets with names of buildings and properties such as the Church, Hospital, Taverns, etc.

At the end of the 17th century what is now the historical centre of Fuenlabrada was established, and at that time it had a population of around one thousand inhabitants.

The origins of its name are due to one of the fountains that has disappeared, namely “labrada a cal y canto” and known as Fuente de Fregacedos.
