Colonia de El Viso

El Viso quarter is located to the north of Madrid and belongs to the Chamartín District along with the Prosperidad, Ciudad Jardín, Hispanoamérica, Nueva España and Castilla quarters.

It covers an area of 170.80 hectares in the Chamartín District and borders to the north with Avenida de Concha Espina, to the east with Calle Príncipe de Vergara, to the south with Calle María de Molina and to the west with Paseo de la Castellana.

The quarter consists of luxury residential buildings, embassies, office and administrative buildings. It is a very up-market residential quarter.

Information about El Viso

The Origins of El Viso

El Viso was built as a colony between 1933 and 1936 following the design by the architect Rafael Bergamín (brother of the author José Bergamín, a member of the so-Called “Generation 27”), with help by his nephew Luis Felipe Vivanco. The original idea was to build a residential complex of hotels and low-rise housing under the name of “El Viso Cheap Housing Cooperative”, inspired on work by the architect Adolf Loos.

The colony is an example of the period known as Madrid rationalism and is one of the clearest examples of it, although it can also be seen in other buildings such as those in “Ciudad Universitaria”. The architecture broke away entirely from any type of formalisms, clean architecture and a search for optimum orientation. The colony was initially built following legislation for labourers’ and public employees’ housing, but owing to its location and the single-family homes on two floors, it became an up-market residential area for middle to high class people and intellects of the time.

The colony was developed following an orthogonal, fishbone layout with the main axis being Calle Serrano. It consisted of rectangular blocks of single-family homes arranged in rows, which had a garden at the front and a garden / yard at the back. Initially 130 homes were planned, but eventually 242 were built on plots of 352 m2, and although there was a defined standard, the projects were designed individually. Some of the gardens were designed by Javier de Winthuysen, such as those for Ortega y Gasset and Salvador de Madariaga, both in 1934.

The area revalued from the 70’s onwards, and today it is one of the quarters with the highest income per capita. As Madrid spread, El Viso became closer to the centre of the capital.
