The Cuatro Caminos quarter belongs to the Tetuán district, along with the quarters: Bellas Vistas, Castillejos, Almenara, Valdeacederas and Berruguete.

Emblematic sites in Cuatro Caminos

The mixture of styles where the old and modern areas of Cuatro Caminos meet are one of its characteristics features. The former contains small, old working class houses, whereas the new part features modern, imposing buildings such as the Nuevos Ministerios and the AZCA Financial District.

Glorieta de Cuatro Caminos: This is the centre and heart of the quarter. The name “Cuatro Caminos” [Four Roads] is precisely because of the crossroads where Calle Bravo Murillo (at the time Called Camino de Francia), Avenida Reina Victoria (Ccamino de Aceiteros), paseo de Santa Engracia and Calle de Raimundo Fernández Villaverde (Called paseo de la Ronda) meet.

Casa de Socorro: Built in the neo-Mudejar style, this house is located on the corner of Santa Engracia and Raimundo Fernández Villaverde streets. It is the work of the architect Pablo Aranda in 1899.

Jornaleros de San Francisco de Paula Hospital: Better known as the Maudes Hospital, it was commissioned by a charity founded by Dolores Romero y Arano, the widow of Francisco Curiel, to provide free healthcare for Madrid’s labourers. It was designed by Antonio Palacios and Joaquín Otamendi. In 1979 it was declared a Site of Cultural Interest, and currently belongs to the Region of Madrid Administration. It now houses the Transport, Housing and Infrastructure Council.

Red Cross Hospital: This hospital was built at the end of the 19th century thanks to Adela Balboa y Gómez, who died with no heirs and left her inheritance for the construction of a healthcare centre for infectious diseases. The centre was Called “Casa de Salud San José y Santa Adela”.

AZCA Financial District: This district covers an area of 19 hectares describing an almost rectangular layout, which is home to many of Madrid's most important buildings.

The origins of Cuatro Caminos

The origins of Cuatro Caminos date back to the African War in 1860 when the victorious army camped in the fields to the north of Madrid, belonging to Chamartín de la Rosa. Merchants set up around the camp, and the quarter known as “Tetuán de las Victorias” was established, taken from the Moroccan city of Tétouan where the soldiers had returned from.

The quarter consolidated in the final quarter of the 19th century with its own church, festivities and the first school in 1892. The Glorieta de Cuatro Caminos was built in the early 20th century, which at that time had a fountain.

Subsequent layout of the Progreso - Cuatro Caminos metro line in 1919 was extended to reach Tetuán in 1929, thus contributing to the development of the quarter.

The quarter grew until it merged with the village of Tetuán de Las Victorias. This district, which was located in the so-Called Chamartín de la Rosa, merged with the Cuatro Caminos suburb and in 1948 it was annexed to Madrid along with Chamartín, and became an independent district in the 1955 territorial division.
