Information about Barajas

The origins of Barajas

Barajas was one of the historical villages near to Madrid. The Villa led to the municipal district of Barajas de Madrid, which is the origin of the district. It was originally entirely rural with arable and livestock farming until the airport was built. In 1929 an area spanning 165 hectares was bought to build the first aerodrome in Madrid. Commercial flight operations at the airport began at the end of 1933.

It has become a major communications centre with the corresponding industrial areas.

It previously belonged to the districts of Chamartín and Hortaleza, but in 1950 it was annexed to Madrid and became a district of the capital, along with Hortaleza, Canillas, Canillejas and Vallecas, among others.

  • El Capricho de la Alameda de Osuna Park: Created in 1784 by the Dukes of Osuna, mainly the Duchess, María Josefa de la Soledad Alonso Pimentel, who wanted to create an area in the middle of the countryside where the celebrities of the period could go. Following the death of the Duchess, the area fell into decline, until Madrid City Hall bought the park in 1974 and started to work on renovation which was completed in 1999.
