Natural extension of La Castellana

Alcobendas is a township in the Region of Madrid located 17 km north of the capital at an altitude of 669 metres above sea level. It borders to the north with San Sebastián de los Reyes; to the west and south with Madrid; and to the east with Paracuellos del Jarama.

Nestled in the River Jarama valley, Alcobendas has often been referred to as the “natural extension of Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid”.

Its history has always been closely linked to neighbouring San Sebastián de los Reyes, from which it is separated by two streets, Avenida de España and Avenida de Madrid.

The History of Alcobendas

After Madrid and its Alfoz (surrounding area) was taken back by Alfonso VI in 1085, Alcobendas still belonged to the Villa of Madrid. This dependence lasted until the War of Succession in Castile in the middle of the 14th century, between Pedro I “The Cruel” and his brother, Enrique II of Trastámara, during which Madrid openly supported Pedro I. Beaten by his brother at the Battle of Montiel, the Castilian throne fell into the hands of Enrique II.

The king granted privileges, known as “Mercedes Enriqueñas” [Enrique Privileges] to certain nobles who had supported him. In 1369, Enrique II granted lordship over Alcobendas and other territories in Madrid, such as Real de Manzanares, Sexmo de Lozoya and the settlements of Barajas and Cobeña to Pedro González de Mendoza, the butler of Juan I, thus depriving Madrid of a large part its income from its former Alfoz [surrounding areas]

This altered relations, and for many it was the origin of future conflicts, such as the one that took place a century later, leading to some residents of Alcobendas, establishing San Sebastián de los Reyes.
