Information about Parla

Origins of Parla

During the Middle Age, and through to 1649, the current territory of Parla was divided into two settlements belonging to Madrid's outlying area: Parla to the north and Humanejos to the south.

The first historical references to Parla appear in a document dating back to 1255. In 1348 King Alfonso XI granted lordship to Cardinal Pedro Gómez Barroso, and from then on Parla became a Villa. Successive monarchs confirmed this privilege.

Humanejos remained unpopulated from 1348 until approximately 1481, when it started to be repopulated. Several residents of Parla applied to the Villa of Madrid Council for authorisation to settle there, along with other residents of surrounding settlements.

When Felipe II moved the capital to Madrid, Parla's population increased to reach around 200. At this time it was an arable and livestock farming community supplying the Court with straw, barley and vegetable produce.

At the end of the 16th century and early 17th century different religious buildings were constructed. In 1649 Humanejos was finally depopulated, with the last inhabitants moving to live in Parla. The current town was therefore established at that point.
