Information about Hortaleza

The history of Hortaleza

Canillas and Hortaleza were both formerly villas whose roots date back to Castilian repopulation during the 12th and 13th centuries, with the aim of consolidating the territory conquered by Muslim troops. To achieve this, the Crown ordered establishing settlements along rivers and streams in the area, granting benefits as incentives to encourage the establishing of these settlements.

This town was originally established near La Reja stream (now Calle Gran Via de Hortaleza), and in the 14th century what are now the historical centres of each villa moved here. When the Court was established in Madrid, these areas underwent growth and the economy was mainly based on cereal and grape production, and also wine.

The nobles used the land in Hortaleza district to buy properties for recreational purposes, which is why many farms were built in the area, known as “Quintas”, such as Quinta de Santa Sofía, Finca de El Quinto (now the Police Academy), Huerta de Mena and Buena Vista Palace (now Isabel Clara Eugenia Park).

In 1949 Canillas and Hortaleza were annexed to the municipal district of Madrid, and in 1970 Hortaleza, as it is today, came about, with construction of housing complexes such as El Bosque, La Piovera and Conde Orgaz, among others.

Historical characters of Hortaleza

Famous characters throughout history have lived in Hortaleza, such as Ortega y Gasset, Rafael Alberti and Carlos Arniches, who owned Huerta de Mena for some time.
