Information about Fuencarral - El Pardo

The history of Fuencarral - El Pardo

The Fuencarral district formerly belonged to the Villa of Fuencarral and the Pardo Royal Site, both annexed to Madrid in 1949. El Pardo and Valverde were built very gradually, since urban development began in 1950 with the Mirasierra, Barrio del Pilar, Peñagrande, La Ventilla and the Fuencarral UVA (Residential Overflow Site) development sites,

All of these areas were developed until the different quarters merged into one. Ciudad de los Periodistas and La Vaguada were both built after 1970.

Nature in Fuencarral - El Pardo

Monte del Pardo is one of Madrid’s green lungs, covering an area of around 16,000 hectares, crossed by the River Manzanares.

The origins of its name are probably due to the brownish colour of the soil [Pardo meaning brown in Spanish], although some researchers link it to the brown bear, a species that was abundant in the area in centuries gone by.

The Spanish monarchs, and Franco afterwards, used the hill as their private hunting grounds. In 1987 it was declared a Special Birdlife Protection Zone (ZEPA).

Monte de El Pardo is home to El Pardo Reservoir covering an area of 550 hectares and with a capacity of 43 hm3. It was built to regulate the dams channelling the river on its way through Madrid.

Monte de El Pardo is also the perfect site for cycling enthusiasts. There are hundreds of paths and tracks that lead to villages in the Sierra de Madrid, such as Hoyo de Manzanares, Tres Cantos and Colmenar Viejo. There are also viewpoints and picnic areas to rest and enjoy the views of nature and the city, such as the four towers of Madrid.

There is a visitors’ centre at Montecarmelo providing information about the nature and wildlife in Monte de El Pardo which holds workshops, talks, guided walks, contents, etc.
