The financial axis of Madrid

Information about Castellana

History of paseo de la Castellana:

Paseo de la Castellana was built in three sections at different times in history. The first extension of paseo del Prado and Recoletos was built during the reign of María Cristina de Borbón, before the birth of Isabel II. It was originally Called paseo de las Delicias de la Princesa, in honour of the future Queen, and was renovated in 1834.

Both paseo del Prado and Recoletos and this new section were designed as a wide gardened street. The layout follows the stream from Castellana spring (which was located slightly north of Plaza del Doctor Marañón) and extended to the former hippodrome, a meeting place for high society (now Called Nuevos Ministerios). It was popularly known as paseo de la Fuente Castellana, but was officially Called paseo de las Delicias de la Princesa, which, along with paseo del Prado and Recoletos, was where the nobility lived.

The financial aristocrats lived in small palaces on these streets, converting the paseo de la Castellana in a fashionable area despite its distance from the centre. The buildings were luxurious homes with gardens facing the street and the stable yards to the rear. Only around 20% of these buildings remain today, and some have been converted in banks or the offices of official organisations.

When construction began again in 1948, an agreement was reached to extend the street, continuing with what would become the second section. During this expansion, the intention was to divide the section in three parts, one commercial area for fairs, exhibitions and shops (the future AZCA and Congress Palace), another where there would be homes for the new middle class, and a third which would be used for private initiatives (land sold off).

The Santiago Bernabéu stadium was built in 1947 with three extensions having been built since then.

In 1980, with the Castro Plan, the city was divided into three areas based on wealth: Historical Centre, Extension and Outskirts. paseo de la Castellana was the union between the three zones, since it crossed the city from north to south.

In 1911 the merging of paseo, paseo del Prado and Recoletos were given the name paseo de la Libertad, but the name did not stick. In 1936 the name was changed to Avenida de la Unión Proletaria, which remained until the Civil War when Franco changed the name to Avenida del Generalísimo, and in 1980 the City Hall finally changed its name to paseo de la Castellana.
