Information about Arganzuela

The origins of Arganzuela

The Arganzuela district is the natural southern extension of the Historical centre. Until the 18th century it was used for services, Fernando VI designed the walkways that currently define the layout of the district.

The industrial development of Arganzuela came about with construction of the railway, installation of a Gas Factory and the addition of land to the Ensanche de Madrid (Madrid Extension) project in the 19th century.

In accordance with the Town Planning of 1963, social reform of Arganzuela took place, subsequently developed through the Special Avda. de la Paz Plan (M-30) and the Pasillo Verde Ferroviario Action Plan. This meant that the industrial facilities in the district were moved away to make space for parks and cultural centres.

The backbone is the Salón de Pinos, a walkway 30 m wide and over 6 km long, surrounded by trees, with access to the park’s six big gardens: Jardines Aniceto Marinas, Jardines de Virgen del Puerto, Jardines Bajos del Puente de Segovia, Jardines del Puente de Toledo, Parque de la Arganzuela and Matadero. In addition to the Avenida de Portugal and Huerta de la Partida areas, the fountains and ponds, the Parque de Arganzuela Park has an “urban” beach and bridges all along the route, including the iconic Arganzuela Bridge, designed by the French architect Dominique Perrault, joining Carabanchel and Arganzuela. Madrid Río has over 30 km of cycle paths (linking up to the Green Cycle Path Ring to the north and south), 33 skating rinks, skateboard track, climbing wall, 7 and 11-a-side football pitches, Futsal courts, tennis courts, basketball courts and BMX track. It also has 18 children’s playgrounds, 3 elderly persons’ exercise circuits, 9 petanque pitches, three cultural event platforms on Puente del Rey, Arganzuela and Matadero Park and the River Manzanares Visitors’ Centre. In addition to all this is the Matadero Madrid Cultural Complex and the future rowing centre.
