Information about Villa de Vallecas

History of Villa de Vallecas

The village of Vallecas had been an independent township until it was annexed to Madrid in 1950. In the restructuring of 1987, the former Vallecas district was divided into two: Puente de Vallecas and Villa de Vallecas.

Its proximity to the capital expanded cereal cultivation, since it provided Madrid with cereal, hay and bread. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Vallecas Villa was the main bread supplier of Madrid, with over seventy bakeries.

Around the second half of the 19th century, relations with Madrid were intensified and they provided building materials for the Ensanche works, apart from cereal. The very many builders that moved to Madrid were welcomed.

In its origins in 1970, Santa Eugenia was designed as a private residential area, under the name of Residential City of Santa Eugenia, an area with large gardens that followed the model of characteristic commuter towns at the time.

Ensanche de Vallecas, designed as part of the Urban Action Plan (PAU) of Vallecas in 1997, referred to the urban development set out in the 1990’s to enlarge the city. The buildings in the area are considered modern architecture and use bright colours.
