San Sebastián de los Reyes is a town within the Region of Madrid located 18 kilometres from the capital. It covers a surface area of 59.26 km2 and is commonly known by its abbreviation “Sanse”.

It is located above the River Jarama Valley, at an altitude slightly over 700 metres above sea level.

Urban sprawl since the 1960's did away with its rural atmosphere to the extent that it was subsequently absorbed into the capital’s metropolitan area, coinciding with the urban expansion of Alcobendas.

Information about San Sebastián de los Reyes

The History of San Sebastián de los Reyes

San Sebastián de los Reyes was founded in 1492 when oppression by Juan Arias de Ávila, the future Count of Puñonrostro, forced thirty-two residents out of Alcobendas who felt oppressed by their feudal Lord and fled to settle in huts around San Sebastián Shrine, that belonged to the group of outlying villages depending on Madrid, i.e. its “Alfoz”.

The Catholic Monarchs of Spain allowed this new settlement to establish around the Shrine, bordering with Madrid “Villa” and therefore falling under Royal jurisdiction. Hence the name “San Sebastián de los Reyes”, which only changed its name very briefly during the 1868 Revolution, from “de los Reyes” [of the Kings] to “de la Soberanía” [of the Sovereignty].

The history of San Sebastián de los Reyes has always been closely linked to neighbouring Alcobendas, from which it is separated by two streets, Avenida de España and Avenida de Madrid.
