Moncloa - Aravaca District is located in the northeast of Madrid. It covers an area of 4,492.75 hectares and includes seven quarters: Casa de Campo, Argüelles, Ciudad Universitaria, Valdezarza, Valdemarín, El Plantío and Aravaca.

Its area includes Casa de Camp covering an area of 1,722.6 hectares and is the main green lung of the city. It is home to the Fun Fair, the Zoo, the Trade Fair and Country Club.

The district is also one of the main student areas in the city, being home to Ciudad Universitaria.

Information about Moncloa - Aravaca

History of Moncloa - Aravaca

Most of the district was woodland with a small cluster of buildings in Aravaca until 1920, and in 1949 it was annexed to Madrid.

The University Area (Ciudad Universitaria) came about in 1940 when some semi-rural detached homes were built. Some luxury homes were built in the 50’s in National Heritage areas, and in 1970 mass construction began on the land bordering Tetuán (Valdezarza, Francos Rodríguez and Ciudad de los Poetas).

Casa de Campo was a Royal Site for hunting and recreation by the royalty comprising a forest area with low hills and shallow valleys with streams.

Felipe II established his royal residence in the former Alcázar (the fortress that is now the Royal Palace) when the Court moved to Madrid in 1561. He was a keen hunter and ordered purchase of Casa de Campo from the Vargas family and another estate in the adjoining area.

Fernando VI named Casa de Campo the Royal Forest and there are still remains of its royal past in the historical buildings that are still standing: Vargas Palace, Culebra Bridge, la Tapia or el Reservado. During the Second Republic it was transferred to the Madrid City Hall.
