The areas are divided into logistics and industrial categories, depending on which motorway axis they are located on and also in which of the rings according to the distance from the centre of Madrid. The first ring is the prime industrial ring. The main logistics and industrial areas in the Region of Madrid are:

Henares Corridor - A2 Axis

This is the industrial centre known as the “eje de oro de la logística en España” (Golden Logistics Axis of Spain), and the main industrial area in the central part of the country. This area comprises sixteen townships located on both sides of the A2 motorway, including San Fernando de Henares, Alcalá de Henares, Meco, Coslada and Torrejón de Ardoz, just to name some, and extends to Guadalajara. Coslada is currently the home to most logistics companies in Spain.

The first ring includes the towns of Coslada, San Fernando de Henares and Torrejón de Ardoz; the second Alcalá de Henares, Daganzo and Meco, whereas the third ring includes the following towns in Guadalajara province: Quer, Alovera, Azuqueca de Henares and Cabanillas del Campo.

The enormous success of logistics activity in this area is largely due to good communications with Zaragoza, Barcelona and Bilbao. There are also some major infrastructures in close proximity to the Henares Corridor, such as the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport Cargo Centre, the Dry Port Freight Terminal, the Vicálvaro Container Terminal and the East Madrid Intermodal Logistics Centre.

Some of the main zones along the Henares Corridor are as follows: Zona Industrial Alcalá Park, Polígono Industrial Carretera de Daganzo, Polígono Industrial La Garena, Parque Logístico La Garena, Polígono Industrial Coslada, Polígono Logístico Logispark I, Polígono Logístico Logispark II, Polígono Industrial Mecosur, Polígono Industrial La Estación, Parque Industrial Las Monjas, Parque Logístico Torrejón de Ardoz and Polígono Industrial Torrejón de Ardoz.

South Zone - Axes A42 to A4

This is the second concentration of industry and logistics in the Region of Madrid, running parallel to the Andalusia and Toledo motorways. It covers the areas of Pinto, Getafe, Villaverde and Valdemoro, reaching Illescas (Toledo province). It is located in the Getafe Logistics Supply Centre, with companies such as Salvesen Logistics.

The Villaverde district and towns of Leganés, Fuenlabrada and Getafe are located within the first ring. In the second are Valdemoro, Ciempozuelos and in Toledo province Seseña and Illescas. Aranjuez is in the third ring, as are the towns of Ontígola, Borox and Ocaña in Toledo province.

Levante Corridor - A3

A large number of logistics centres are located along the Valencia motorway connecting up with the Levante Corridor. In the first ring is Vallecas, in the second Arganda del Rey and Campo Real, and in the third are Villarejo de Salvanés and Tarancón in Cuenca province.

Las Monjas Industrial Estate in Arganda del Rey is one of the largest industrial estates.

Natural, cultural and business wealth

The Region of Madrid is one of the autonomous regions of Spain, located in the middle of the Central Plateau comprising an area of 8021.80 km2 and borders with the provinces of Guadalajara, Cuenca, Toledo, Ávila and Segovia.

It is home to an array of cultural and artistic heritage, and also three World Heritage Sites, namely the: Monastery and Site of El Escorial, University and Historic Precinct of Alcalá de Henares and the Aranjuez Cultural Landscape.

Origins of Madrid Province

During the Roman era Madrid was only a transit town, although Complutum, now Alcalá de Henares, held a lot of power as the Episcopal Seat in the 5th century, and was the focal point of culture during the Spanish Golden Age.

During the invasion by the Moors, the centre "Magerit” (meaning “land rich in water” in Arabic) was established because of its strategic defensive location with regard to the passing of Christians to Toledo. During that period the city was overshadowed by other more important cities such as Cordoba and Toledo.

Around the middle of the 11th century, two centuries after the “Alcázar” (Fortress) was built, Madrid reached its climax of Islamic splendour. The market, located outside the fortress, acquired great fame.

In 1083 Alfonso VI and his soldiers took the small fortified city of Madrid, expelling the Moors, and the city therefore fell into Christian hands.

In 1123 Madrid became a “Villa”, and in 1561 Felipe II moved the Royal Court to Madrid. At that time construction began on buildings and monuments in the area, now known as “Madrid de los Austrias”.
