It is also home to the following industrial estates: Polígono Industrial Ciudad Pegaso, Polígono Industrial Colonia Fin de Semana, Polígono Industrial Puente de San Fernando and Polígono Industrial Reserva FFCC Fin de Semana.

The area around Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport also has the industrial estates Polígono Industrial Iberia and Polígono Industrial Colonia Aeropuerto. This area is included in the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Real Estate Plan with the aim of becoming one of the most important logistics hubs in the Region of Madrid. It covers an area of 920 hectares of potential land with a forecast for developing 562 hectares, which will end up as 2.7 million square metres of building land and 140 hectares of green areas. As for the logistics hub itself, this will cover an area of 257 hectares, on which 1.4 million square metres will be building land, next to the Henares corridor.

South Zone

Information on Madrid

The Origins of Madrid

The first settlements in Madrid date back to the Muslim era, when Muhammad I, Emir of Córdoba, built the first fort to police the possible transit of Christians on their way to Toledo.

Some remains of the fort can still be found in Cuesta de la Vega, next to the Royal Palace. The settlement grew around the walls to give rise to Madrid “Magerit” meaning “land rich in water” in Arabic.

The city fell into Christian hands in 1083, and in 1123 it became a Villa. Felipe II brought the Royal Court to Madrid in 1561, when some of the buildings and monuments comprising the so-Called “Madrid de los Austrias” were built.

The nickname “Gatos” [Cats], used to refer to natives of Madrid, dates back to 1085 when Madrid was under Arab rule and was protected by the fort built by Muhammed I. When Alfonso VI’s troops decided to lay siege to Madrid, they reached the wall and one of the soldiers scaled it with such agility that he earned himself the nickname of “Gato” [Cat]. The soldier changed his surname to Gato, and from then on it was used as a name to refer to acts of bravery. As time went by, the nickname was adopted by all third generation Madrid natives.

Madrid is divided into 21 districts, which in turn are divided into quarters:

  • Centro: Palacio, Embajadores, Cortes, Justicia, Universidad and Sol.
  • Arganzuela: Imperial, Acacias, La Chopera, Legazpi, Delicias, Palos de Moguer and Atocha.
  • Retiro: Pacífico, Adelfas, Estrella, Ibiza, Jerónimos and Niño Jesús.
  • Salamanca: Recoletos, Goya, Fuente del Berro, Guindalera, Lista and Castellana.
  • Chamartín: El Viso, Prosperidad, Ciudad Jardín, Hispanoamérica, Nueva España and Castilla.
  • Tetuán: Bellas Vistas, Cuatro Caminos, Castillejos, Almenara, Valdeacederas and Berruguete.
  • Chamberí: Gaztambide, Arapiles, Trafalgar, Almagro, Ríos Rosas and Vallehermoso.
