COVIBAR, acronym for Cooperative Workers of Cheap Housing, is a housing cooperative that was born as a great utopia and today is a unique reality, mainly due to its urban dimension and concept, its management model and its social project. In addition, she is proud to have contributed, as one of the pioneers since the early 80s, to the exponential growth and development of Rivas Vaciamadrid. For all these reasons, among many others, COVIBAR has a neighborhood entity within Rivas, with its own signs of identity, such as the spirit of coexistence, vindicative and solidarity of its neighbors.
Despite the fact that the construction of the 4,500 houses was completed in 1994, the Cooperative did not dissolve and from that moment on an ambitious social project focused on promoting the culture, sport and leisure of the members of the cooperative and all the ripenses, together with the conservation and improvement of the heritage cooperative.
The development of this social project was and continues to be possible thanks to the management model applied in COVIBAR, of which there are no comparable examples. This model allows for the self-financing necessary to develop the project, thanks to the economic returns of the cooperative assets, which are reinvested in the welfare of the members, with a contribution also to that of the ripenses.
At present COVIBAR is presented as a very special non-profit cooperative project, which puts no limits to its dimension in order, from our closest environment in Rivas Vaciamadrid, to contribute to the improvement of society. Therefore, despite the passing of the years, because of its evolution and adaptation to the times, it continues to have meaning and validity today, and is prepared to continue strongly in the future, to continue to demonstrate that utopias do make sense.
Today, the Cooperative continues to develop an increasingly ambitious social project, the cooperative heritage continues to improve and grow, and the members remain the sole owners and democratically elect the government of the cooperative, exercised by the members' Governing Council. In addition, COVIBAR's social work is not only at the service of its partners, but also of all ripenses. The promotion of culture, sport, leisure, commercial and entrepreneurial development, or also helping young people to access housing, are clear examples of COVIBAR's laudable mission of contributing to the well-being of people and achieving a better society.
